What is the Palmer Package
The Palmer Package refers to set of adjustment modalities and techniques taught at Palmer College of Chiropractic that provide the technique expertise needed to deal with virtually any clinical situation that may present in practice.
These chiropractic techniques include:
Diversified technique, also commonly referred to as Diversified Chiropractic Technique, or DCT, involves application of “a short (low-amplitude), quick (high-velocity) thrust over restricted joints (one at a time) with the goal of restoring normal range of motion in the joint.”
DCT was first developed by Dr. D.D. Palmer (founder of Palmer College of Chiropractic) in 1897. Diversified technique has three main objectives:
-
- restore spinal alignment
- repair joint dysfunction,
- and enhance proper movement.2
Thompson technique was developed by Dr. J. Clay Thompson. This technique is a system of chiropractic analysis and a way to offer patients a less forceful adjustment. A special drop table to helps DCs provide high velocity, low amplitude, and low force adjustments. 3
Gonstead technique was developed by Dr. Clarence S. Gonstead. The Gonstead technique is “a full-spine osseous technique, emphasizing specific high-velocity, low-amplitude (HVLA) thrusts.4” During a Gonstead adjustment, the chiropractor adjusts your lower spine and pelvis by having you lie on your side. This adjustment technique does not twist or rotate your neck.
Toggle Recoil technique developed by Dr. B.J. Palmer. (Dr. D.D. Palmer’s son). Toggle Recoil technique 5 is a gentle chiropractic technique used to correct the positioning of the upper cervical vertebra, without the use of any twisting, bending, or cracking of the neck. The most important part of a Toggle-Recoil adjustment is the recoil. After thrusting, a quick recoil allows the C1 vertebra to vibrate/oscillate within its normal range until equilibration is reached.6
